Mr Haile Menkerios

 

Ambassador Haile Menkerios has more than 30 years of experience in conflict resolution. A career diplomat, he served as Special Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General (UNSG) and head of the UN Office to the African Union (2013-2018).

Prior to this, Amb. Menkerios served as Special Envoy of the UNSG for Sudan and South Sudan (2011-2013) and Head of the UN Mission in Sudan (2009-2011), as well as UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs in New York (2007-2009).

Since he joined the UN in 2001, Amb. Menkerios held several other senior UN positions including in field missions dealing with issues of peace and security.

His engagements during his career  included successful mediation efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zimbabwe, the African Great Lakes Region, Madagascar, and The Comoros.

Prior to his time with the UN, Amb. Menkerios served as Eritrean Permanent Representative to the UN (1997-2000), Special Envoy to Somalia and the Great Lakes Region and Ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union during the critical period of Eritrea’s separation from Ethiopia.

Awards and recognition:

-Awarded the Medal of Recognition as “Fighter against Genocide” by President Paul Kagame of Rwanda (2014)

-Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the US Government for leading the implementation of the Sudanese National Peace Agreement between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Front that culminated in the peaceful conduct of the South Sudan referendum (2010) and South Sudan’s independence.
